1. 9/11
This is the quatrain that is largely agreed upon as being a terrifying prediction of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The years are a bit off but that is not unusual for Nostradamus whose long term astrological predictions are always a bit off (no computers back then.) Also nobody is sure if Nostradamus was using the Gregorian or Julian calendar to calculate his dates. There is a detailed explanation from the seer that vaguely explains his methods of calculation in a reprint of a letter he wrote to Henry II (Epistle to Henry II) at the end of this book.
In the year 1999, in the seventh month,
from the sky will come the great King of Terror,
bringing back to life the great King of the Mongols.
Before and after, Mars to reign by good fortune.
Although the date of the event appears to be two years too early, it is important to remember that Nostradamus often wrote in anagrams. The real clue is that the date 1999 is nothing more than a numeric anagram. If we reverse the order of the “1”s and “9”s, we arrive at the date 9-11-1 (the date of the 9-11 attacks).
Even more frightening is the following quatrain.
Earth-shaking fire from the center of the earth.
will cause the towers around the New City to shake,
Two great rocks for a long time will make war,
And then Arethusa (a ship) will color a new river red.
(Century 1, Quatrain 87)
Although this is a weaker quatrain, there is a mention of the New City, which may be New City and “the towers” which may allude to the twin towers. Arethusa is thought to be an anagram for an event that we have yet to see that is related to terrorist attacks and the war in Iraq.
2.Hurricane Katrina
The cities of Tours, Orleans, Blois, Angers, Reims and Nantes
are troubled by sudden change.
Tents will be pitched by (people) of foreign tongues;
rivers, darts at Rennes, shaking of land and sea.
(Century 1, Quatrain 50)
Although traditionally this quatrain was originally thought to refer to France, the Orleans here might be New Orleans in this Quatrain. The “rivers and the shaking of land and sea†could be referred to as the hurricane.
Another the key is “tents will be pitched by people of foreign tongues.†These could be d be aid workers from other countries
3. Bird Flu?
This quatrain, which talks of a worldwide plague may be in reference to the bird flu.
The great famine, which I sense approaching
will often turn (in various areas) then become worldwide.
It will be so vast and long lasting that (they) will grab
roots from the trees and children from the breast
Century 1, Quatrain 65.
This appears to predict a virus transmitted by bodily fluids. As an aside, Nostradamus also won wide acclaim for his plague-protecting potion of garlic and aloe; it may sound primitive, but garlic’s antibacterial properties have since been acknowledged while aloe is noted for the immunostimulatory properties that increase the immune system’s ability to fight infection and disease.
In another spectacular quatrain, Nostradamus talks of seeing the result of a great plague from an astronaut’s point of view.
A very great famine caused by a pestilent wave
Through a long rain the length of the Artic pole
Saarobryn one hundre leagues from the hemisphere
They will live without law; exempt from politics
(Century 6 – Quatrain 5)
The Avian Bird Flu Virus as seen under an electronic microscope.
This quatrain refers to a pestilent wave (disease) that can be viewed from the Artic pole from Saarobryn (an anagram for a space station) from one hundred leagues (about 300 miles up in the sky where space shuttles fly.)
Some people interpret Saarobryn to be an anagram for Sam Rayborn, the American senator who along with Senator Lyndon Johnson was instrumental in passing the bill that created NASA.
4. The Iraq War
There is a quatrain of Nostradamus that clearly points to three conflicts occurring in the areas of Arabia/Kuwait, of Eastern Turkey and of Iran. The first one already came to pass 12 years ago in what came be to known as Desert Storm. The second one refers to the current war in Iraq. And the third one is for the near future when, this time, Iran will be involved also.
The first quatrain is
On the field of Iran, of Arabia and of Eastern Turkey
Two great armies will assemble three times
Near the river Araks
The host of the great Suleiman will be cut off
(Century 3, Quatrain 31)
“By firepower of armies, not far from the Black Sea,
He will come from Iran to occupy Trebizond
(Century 5, Quatrain 27)
Trebizond is a strategic city in Eastern Turkey on the shores of the Black Sea.
Quatrain No.54, Century No. 5, states:
From the Black Sea and the great Tartary;
a would be king will come to see Gaul
He will transpire Alania and Armenia
and in Istanbul will leave his bloody standard.
Gaul was an ancient name for Turkey and Alania is modern day Chechnya that suggests Russian involvement in the Iraq-Iran conflicts in the near future.
3. The Death of Pope John Paul I
Much to the dismay of many Catholics, there are several quatrains that point to the death of Pope John Paul I being a murder. This pope held office for only 35 days in 1978 and died mysteriously
“When the tomb of the great Roman is found,
a new Pope will be elected the following day
he will not be approved by the Senate
his blood poisoned in the sacred chalice.
(Century 3, Quatrain 65)
A murder is once again pointed to in this quatrain. The tomb of the great Roman is St. Peter. The senate is the Cardinals of the Curia. The quatrain implies that Pope John Paul I was poisoned by being given something to drink.
“He who shall have the government of the great cloak
will be led to execution in several cases.
The twelve red ones will come to spoil the cover
beneath murder, murder is done.”
(Century 4, Quatrain 11)
The one in the great cloak is the Pope. The twelve red ones refer to the cardinals.
“Elected as Pope he will be mocked by the chosen
suddenly and unexpectedly removed, prompt and timid.
Caused to die, through too much goodness and kindness
he will fear for the guard killed on the night of his death.”
(Century 10, Quatrain 12)
In 1979 new Pope (John Paul I) had scarcely been pope for a month, when suddenly, he died. He was immediately cremated which is unusual because of the tradition of the entombment of popes within the Vatican walls. An autopsy was not performed and a cause of death not officially determined. This has created much speculation about a conspiracy to eliminate him because he was perceived as being too weak to deal with the issues of the day.
5. The Death of Princess Diana
Here is a quatrain that many followers of Nostradamus perceive as one of his greatest predictions.
The last son of the man with the Prophet’s name
Will bring Diana to her day of rest.
At a distance they wander in frenetic grief
Delivering a great people from ruin.’
(Century 2, Quatrain 28)
The father of Dodi al-Fayed, the owner of Harrod’s department store, is named
Mohammed, the name of the Islamic Prophet (the man with the prophet’s name. ) He is with her until her day of death (day of rest.)
In this verse he gives the month of Diana’s death, it is the last number of the verse. If you add the 2 to 28, you have 30. Diana died on 8/31. We can create 8/30 by adding the numbers making him only one day off.
The space shuttle Challenger, destroyed on take-off on January 28th 1986. The craft combusted just after lift-off from the launch pad.
From the human flock nine will be sent away,
Separated from control and advice
Their fate will be sealed on departure
K-Th-L make a error; the dead banished
(Century 1, Quatrain 81)
This quatrain is off as there were only seven crew members on board (or were there?) However the rest of it is eerily accurate. Separated from control and advice refers to the fact that they were out of communication with NASA Ground Control.
“Their fate was sealed on departure ” certainly gives you something to think about if you consider that afterwards, videos showed flames escaping while the rocket was still on the launching pad.
K-Th-L may be an anagram or short for for ThioKol, the company that manufactured the defective rocket engine. Nostradamus may have omitted the vowels. By the way, a original written the last line is in Latin reading “Kappa, Thita, Lambda mors bannis esgarez. ” And this becomes K-Th-L, which becomes “Thiokol ” which becomes “Morton Thiokol Corporation ”
3. The Three Antichrists
Throughout Nostradamus’ ten centuries of quatrains he speaks of three powerful antichrists that tyrannize the world from his time to ours. He calls these three individuals the anti-christs and the verses have been variously translated and interpreted as below.
Napoleon is widely thought to be the first of these three anti-Christs. Of Napoleon’s rise to power and years as Emperor Nostradamus wrote -
An Emperor shall be born near Italy.
Who shall cost the Empire dear,
They shall say, with what people he keeps company
He shall be found less a Prince than a butcher.
Napoleon was considered to be a butcher even by his allies and supporters.
Napoleon Bonaparte - The First Antichrist?
From a simple soldier he will rise to the empire,
From the short robe he will attain the long.
Great swarms of bees shall arise.
After becoming Emperor, Napoleon adopted the beehive as his imperial crest.
Nostradamus made other predictions of Napoleon’s fate:
The captive prince, conquered, is sent to Elba;
He will sail across the Gulf of Genoa to Marseilles.
By a great effort of the foreign forces he is overcome,
Though he escaped the fire, his bees yield blood by the barrel.
Napoleon was exiled to the small island of Elba but escaped for 100 days. After he was defeated at Waterloo he traded in his power for exile on tiny St. Helena.
The second anti-Christ Nostradamus wrote about was “a man stained with murder...the great enemy of the human race...one who was worse than any who had gone before...bloody and inhuman.” Experts are in agreement that the sixteenth century prophet was referring to Adolf Hitler
2nd Anti-Christ
Hitler -The Second Antichrist?
Out of the deepest part of the west of Europe,
From poor people a young child shall be born,
Who with his tongue shall seduce many people,
His fame shall increase in the Eastern Kingdom.
He shall come to tyrannize the land.
He shall raise up a hatred that had long been dormant.
The child of Germany observes no law.
Cries, and tears, fire, blood, and battle.
A captain of Germany shall come to yield himself by false hope,
So that his revolt shall cause great bloodshed.
The poetic images in these quatrains create an apt portrait of Adolf Hitler.
Beasts wild with hunger will cross the rivers
The greater part of the battlefield will be against Hister.
Finally, Nostradamus sums up Hitler’s life and even predicts that the events surrounding Hitler’s death would be mysterious.
Near the Rhine from the Austrian mountains
Will be born a great man of the people, come too late.
A man who will defend Poland and Hungary
And whose fate will never be certain
Nostradamus speaks of yet a third anti-Christ who will have a disastrous effect on the world. Some say that Saddam Hussein, the dictator from Iraq, could be this evil tyrant. Others say that he has not yet appeared. What does Nostradamus say about this third anti-Christ? First, Nostradamus tells us he will come from the Middle East.
3rd Anti-Christ
Out of the country of Greater Arabia
Shall be born a strong master of Mohammed…
He will enter Europe wearing a blue turban.
He will be the terror of mankind.
Never more horror.
Nostradamus also predicts that this man from Greater Arabia will invade Europe. This invasion will start a third world war that will be far worse than all the other wars put together (In one quatrain Nostradamus gives us an exact date in which the war will be well under way.)
Saddam Hussein - The Third Antichrist?
In the year 1999 and seven months
From the sky will come the great King of Terror.
He will bring back to life the King of the Mongols;
Before and after war reigns.
Of course as discussed in the section of this book that deals with 9/11 this is thought to be the attack on the twin towers. In yet another quatrain he predicts that this war will last seven and twenty years (just in case you were wondering how long it will ever take for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq!
The sky will burn at forty-five degrees.
Fire approaches the great new city.
In this phrase, Nostradamus refers to a great city in the new world of America near forty-five degrees latitude. Experts agree this could only be New York.
By fire he will destroy their city,
A cold and cruel heart,
Blood will pour,
Mercy to none.
Although the prophet of doom seems very gloomy he does predict that the war will be ended by an alliance between America and a country from the North Pole (possibly Russia or Canada).
When those of the Northern Pole are united,
In the East will be great fear and dread…
One day the two great leaders will be friends;
Their great powers will be seen to grow.
The New Land will be at the height of its power:
To the man of blood the number is reported.
Even skeptics pay careful attention to Nostradamus’ predictions of the three anti-Christs. If Nostradamus truly predicted Napoleon and Hitler we should take heed of his words about a future antichrist. In the next chapter we take an even more in-depth look at some of his predictions for the future, which includes a prediction for the end of the world.
